Technology Tools Auditors Can’t Live Without

As more and more technology becomes versatile, laptop users are getting a huge boost in productivity.  Some of these tools include multiple monitors, USB docking stations, wireless devices (such as keyboards/mice/ten-keys), and portable monitors.  What is the practicality of these devices and how can they be a benefit to the user?  What I’d like to explore is some of the devices that help extend an auditor’s workflow.

Multiple Monitors:

Just about every accountant will tell you that having an extra monitor increases their productivity and workflow.  It’s even getting to the point where two monitors aren’t enough.  Some of the best devices to make multiple monitors a reality while working at a local office are as follows (see resources below for full links):

  • USB Video Cards:
    • Kensington Universal Multi-Display adapter
    • eVGA UV Plus
  • Docking station with extra monitor support
    • Vary by manufacturer
  • USB Universal Docking Stations
    • StarTech USBVGADOCK2

To move to three monitors, users can combine the docking station video output, a USB video card, and the monitor screen (or use 2 USB video cards instead).

Wireless devices:

The fewer the cords the better.  The only downfall to wireless devices is battery lastability.  With most of these devices, a wireless configuration allows greater ease of use and provides more benefits to the user. Some of my suggestions are:

  • Microsoft Wireless Mouse 6000
    • With the ability to track on many surfaces, the form of the mouse, and its cost, this mouse provides the best bang for your buck.
  • Kensington Wireless Notebook Keypad/Calculator and Mouse Set
    • The combo of this device allows for a single USB wireless connector for a two-set device with that maintains high reliability.

Portable Monitors:

With individuals getting used to the multiple screens while at the office, laptop users were feeling left out when they were on the go. As of late, new technologies are emerging that are extremely portable.  The best one that I have found is the Toshiba 14-inch USB Mobile LCD Monitor.  It is only 2.8 lbs, comes with its own carrying case that doubles as the monitor’s stand, and is entirely USB-based including the power.  (See resources below for full link)

With Auditors constantly on the go, some of these devices have proven most useful in helping to increase proficiency and work flow. Please contact me at joshk@pbtk.comif you have any questions about how to be more efficient using technology at the office or in the field.
